In 1880, the Bristol Carriage Company created the first leisure trailer. This was made for the usage of Dr. W. Gordon-Stables and was fondly named “The Wanderer” by him. This leisure trailer was modeled upon their Bible Wagons and measured 18 foot. John Anthony Porcella created the first home-made house trailer. He was a restaurateur who traveled extensively and therefore was motivated to make a caravan of his own.
However, the origin of travel trailers goes back to Gypsies of Europe. These people practically lived all their lives in trailers which were driven by horses. Today, travel trailers are not just associated with the Gypsies but also considered as a symbol of their culture. It is interesting to note that these trailers were initially not used for domestic purpose.
The trailers originally started off as a means of transport and remained so until the 19th centaury. Since the 19th centaury the trend of sleeping in caravans was noticed amongst the Gypsies. This was owing to the fact that the caravan was compatible with modern amenities besides being an excellent shield from the rough weather conditions. But, getting hold of caravans was not very easy due to the lack of a commercial caravan industry. This means that caravans were totally hand-made and so each one took as long as a year to be ready for usage. These caravans were often made at the special request of newlyweds.
The history of travel trailers goes back to the early twentieth centaury in Canada and the United States of America. In these nations travel trailers have gone through various stages before transforming into the form in which we know them today. During the ‘20s people using travel trailers were called “travel tin tourists”. During the ‘40s the trailers became much more comfortable and were thus called the “home trailers”.
